Why you should go tandem biking with your partner

Tandem bikes are bloody amazing. There are few experiences like it for a couple.

Sure you could get a bike each and have a nice cycle. But where is the fun in that? Riding together on a tandem bike requires communication, teamwork and togetherness. All things you won’t get riding separately! Tandem riding requires a massive level of trust in the captain/leader and a greater about of communication from both parties.

Don’t let the first ride daunt you. It takes a few rides for you to get into a rhythm with your partner and really start to enjoy it. Once you get a feel for how each other are going to ride then it becomes an amazing, relaxing, calming experience.

Tandem riding can bring your relationship closer together. Nothing challenges you more than the first few tandem rides with your girlfriend. Maybe canoeing but i can’t speak for that thanks to my fear of water. Ill take 2 wheels, 2 cranks and 2 handlebars any day.

Happy couple on tandem bike

If you are ever in need of a new date idea then get down to your local tandem rental shop. I promise you won’t be disappointed. It is hilarious for the first 10 minutes before either of you have worked out how the hell you are going to keep this monstrosity balanced for the next few hours. Once you have the knack of it though you will see why so many people love riding tandem. You will see why so many people love riding tandem with their partners.

Would you rather sit indoors and watch another episode of Breaking Bad on Netflix or explore the city on a bicycle made for two?

Best Single Speed Bikes For Commuting

As commuters we don’t want to be faffing around fixing our bikes everyday or week or faffing around with a folding bike. We lead very busy lifestyles and we need our bikes to be working 100% of the time and not to have to take it in for repairs constantly. This is what makes single speed bikes perfect for commuting; especially in a largely flat city like London (sure there are some hills but London is mostly flat) What are the best single speed bikes for commuting?

Single speed bikes are the perfect option for commuters because they offer a low maintenance and much cheaper alternative to Road Bikes. There are less complicated parts on a single speed bike so they are mechanically very simple to own and maintain, requiring you to only check the brakes and chain tension every now and then.

All you need to properly fix any issues on a single speed bike is a small set of allen keys and spanner or socket to remove the wheels. That’s it. Both of these items fit nicely inside even the smallest backpack or bag. There is no fiddly chain business with the chain derailer or messy hydraulic breaks. This also makes them incredibly light and fast!

Single speed bikes also feature a ‘flip-flop’ rear wheel to switch between free wheeling and fixed gear. With the dominance of the British Cycling team at Rio fixed gear is gaining massive popularity for even casual cyclists and commuters. Olympic track bikes are set up with a fixed gear to really push the speed limits of bikes and the Athletes that ride them.

Single speed bikes also look so much nicer than other bikes because of the minimalism of single speed bikes.

Best Single Speed Bikes For Commuting

Vilano Rampage Single Speed Road Bike Review

Vilano Rampage fixed gear bike review

Vilano are experts at producing quality, affordable bikes and the Vilano Rampage Single Speed bike is no different. It looks amazing with its minimalist styling and array of colours. I go for all black every time because it looks a little bit better in my opinion. However, the The Vilano Rampage single speed still looks good in all its colours. Blue in particular. The Vilano is a clean looking bike.

The Vilano Rampage not only looks the part but rides like a bike much more expensive than it is. This is an entry level bike that feels like a professional bike when you’re riding it. It feels like you can go much faster than usual and manoeuvre very effectively through traffic, parks etc.

Vilano Rampage Single speed bike review

The breaks on the Vilano are ok. The rims are painted all the way up to the breaking surface which leads to the paint being stripped off by the breaks and not locking onto the wheel properly. You can get around this by getting break pads that are made for painted rims and just swapping them over. You don’t want the breaks to fail but you also shouldn’t let a £5 part put you off this fantastic bike.

As an entry level single speed bike this can’t be beaten. I would get a pair of drop bars because i prefer them but otherwise this is the best bike you’ll get for anywhere near the price range.

Retrospec Bicycles Mantra Review

Retrospec Mantra bike review

The next on the list from Retrospec is the Retrospec Mantra. The Mantra is slightly more expensive than the Vilano above but offers a few improvements.

Firstly, the Mantra is lighter than the Vilano, only slightly. It also comes with a nicer seat and handlebars and a smoother looking chain set up. The frame sits a little differently putting the rider a bit higher to focus on getting power into the pedals. This is a great feature for the average commuter. You are able to get yourself into a better position for generating power therefore you expend less effort to get the bike up to speed.

Retrospec Mantra bike review

The peddle straps are another handy feature that the Vilano misses. With the straps you can use the full peddle rotation to power the bike rather than just an up-down peddle movement. The amount of torque you can produce on this bike is incredible. You will be powering through the city no problem on the Retrospec Mantra.

Pure Fix Cycles Original Fixie Bicycle

Pure Fix Original Fixie bike review

Simplicity, Elegance, Urban. The Pure Fix Cycles Original Fixie is a perfect bike for the odd 10 mile journey to work. It is more than capable of comfortably riding 60 miles through the country but for something like that you would need gears. Pure Fix are specialists in fixed gear and single speed bikes and the Original Fixie benefits from that specialism.

In Navy Blue/Silver the Original Fixie is the best looking bike on this list. The retro look is sure to get heads turning. Just like the Vilano; the Original Fixie would benefit from a pair of drop bars to complete the retro look and feel of this bike but the set of risers that it comes with get the job down and look pretty good anyway.

Pure fix original fixie bike review

The Pure Fix Original Fixie weighs approximately 10.5kg. Light enough to carry up and down stairs but sturdy enough to feel secure on the road.

To summarise: the Pure Fix Original Fixie is one hell of a bike. It’s stylish, light and fast and comes with some amazing parts as standard. You would be hard pressed to find a better bike for the money.

The Pure Fix Original is available on Amazon in the UK

Surprise Entry – Vilano Aluminium Road Bike 21 Speed

This Vilano Road Bike is not a single speed bike. Sorry.
Vilano 21 speed bike review
But, it has the look and feel of one. It is simple, sleek and light. The Vilano is perfect for commuting in cities that are a little bit hillier than London thanks to its 21 gears. This bike is literally a single speed bike with gears and I love it. The design is minimal and it looks absolutely fantastic in the flesh. Black from nose to tail and like something crafted by Hephaestus himself. Marvellous.
Vilano 21 speed review
The Vilano 21 speed weighs only 10.9kg out of the box making it one of the lightest bikes in its class. With this comes speed. Without effort the Vilano 21 speed glides effortlessly down the street overtaking everything in sight. Getting from A to B on The Vilano is no effort, all fun. Commuting to work is the highlight of the day on one of these. Commuting home is even better.

The Best Cheap Folding Bikes Review

Folding bikes are a great option for the long distance commuter. If you travel from outside of the city and need an option to cycle from the train station to the office then folding bikes are perfect. Especially in the summer when the underground feels like you’re in a pressure cooker! Cycling that last mile to the office can be a great way to avoid the sweaty underground and get in some cardio. Win-win.

But what are the best cheap folding bikes? If you don’t want to pay out all that money for a Brompton we’ve got you covered. We are going to look at some of the nations favourite cheap folding bikes to cycle to work on that can rival the Brompton.

Firstly, We are going to need some criteria to consider in the review, all the bikes need to:

  • Be small enough to fit in your apartment, office, train etc
  • Have a folding/unfolding process that is quick and achievable in as few steps as possible
  • Be as light as possible to make carrying easier
  • Be durable

If a bike satisfies these criteria then it can be considered a good cheap folding bike. What is cheap? All of the bikes considered are folding bikes under £350 with the cheapest folding bike coming in at only £150.

Dahon Vitesse D8 Folding Bike Review

Dahon have released a few spectacular looking bikes in the past few years.
Vitesse Dahon Vitesse D8 Folding Bike ReviewFrom the Mu Uno single speed to the Vitesse D8 they all have a certain je ne sai que that the competition can’t compete with. The simple and lightweight design are second to none and make it ideal for urban commuting. London seems tiny when you have a Dahon. The Dahon Vitesse is, in my opinion, the big brother of the Uno range.  The Dahon Vitesse folding bike has the Dahon Neos 8-speed shifting system to give much needed gear variability to the the Uno.
Incredibly, the Dahon Vitesse folding bike can be folded in just 15 seconds! This is one of the fastest folding times on the market. Coming in at only 11kg makes it a commuters dream to cycle to work on.

The Dahon Vitesse D8 folding bike gets 4.5 out of 5 from whichcycle.com. Check  out the other reviews on Amazon

As we said at the top: folding bikes are great. And cheap folding bikes for commuting are even better. It doesn’t matter if you are a commuter or want a folding bike for casual rides around town; Folding bikes are versatile enough to cover most of your needs. The best folding bikes that don’t break the bank are the Dahon Vitesse D8 and the ECOSMO 20″ folding bike. How to Tailwhip

How to tailwhip BMX

A staple in any rider’s arsenal. The tailwhip was debuted in 1984 by Joe Johnson and has become one of the symbols of BMX with riders now doing double, triple and even quadruple tail whips.

Before Johnson it was only a BMX rider’s pipe dream that it could be accomplished. Many people had the idea but no one managed to pull it off. The first tail whip in competition was landed one foot on the frame and one on the pedals.

Fast forward to 2008. Mike Spinner, a relatively new rider attempts the first quadruple tail whip at the dew tour in Cleveland, Ohio. This landed him first place for the stop and was one of the most impressive moves seen at the tour.

How to Tailwhip

The Tailwhip, is a relatively simple move once you’ve learnt it. The hard part is landing the first one. I’ll break it down into 5 points:

  1. Take off and either let your feet come off or give the frame a kick with your back foot
  2. Once the bike has started spinning you need to ‘stir’ the handlebars to create momentum. Do this
by moving your arms in a circle with the back end. Once you get the hang of this it becomes easy.
  3. Keep your eyes on the pedals as it comes round and try to catch the front pedal with your leading
  4. Stay over the bike; this means leaning slightly forward to keep your legs high and make it possible
to get your leg over the frame to land on both peddles
  5. Once you have caught the front peddle and your back foot is over the frame and on the other
peddle; clamp. You need to hold the bike steady to land smoothly and not let a foot slip.

Aj Anaya has a great video how to tailwhip on youtube:

Double, triple, quad
 – This variation is where the rider lets the bike pass around for a second, third or forth rotation.
360 tailwhip
-This is where the rider spins a 360(link) while doing a tailwhip.
Opposite/switch tailwhip
 – This is the same as a regular tailwhip but the bike is kicked in the opposite direction to normal.
One handed tailwhip
 – This move adds difficulty to the move because it is more difficult to stir when you only have one hand on the bar.

Best Spinning Bikes and Indoor Bikes review

Winter is coming.

No seriously, winter is coming and that means that it will be more difficult to get out and get on your bike outside. This can be a bit of an issue for those of us that rely on cycling as our main form of exercise. Have you tried to ride a bike in the snow and ice? Not fun right? There is a way to keep up the cycling in the winter and that is by using indoor bikes or a spin bikes. These bikes can be quite cheap whilst maintaining there power and functionality! Spin bikes are perfect for keeping your legs and lungs in a good condition. When spring rolls around you are ready to jump back on the saddle and get outside.

Best Spinning Bikes and Indoor Bikes

Features to look for in a spin bike are the ease of assembly, noise (don’t want to annoy your room mates) and flywheel weight to make the peddling smoother. We have compiled a list of the best spinning bikes reviews to get you started when researching for the perfect spin bike.

It features a 25 kg flywheel for a smooth ride and a fully adjustable saddle to make sure everyone is comfortable when riding and a heart rate sensor monitored by hand pulse.

The LCD display is one of the largest on the market and it makes reading your stats clear when there’s sweat in your eyes. The computer is a basic spin computer and cycles through heart rate, speed, distance, time etc every 8 seconds. Even without any resistance on the flywheel this spinning bike still gives you a hell of a workout; this is great for off season training and staying in shape for the summer.

If there is one thing that really stands out about the Fit Bike Racer 25 it’s that it doesn’t have a flimsy belt. Instead, it uses a decent size chain to make your ride smooth and the bike last much longer than some of its more expensive competitors.

The Subrosa Tiro has a great reputation for being a reliable first bike and it’s not hard to see why. It features some of the most reliable aftermarket parts of all entry level BMX bikes.

There is something about this bike that makes it look amazing. Subrosa have done a brilliant job designing this bike to make it a force to be reckoned with.

You can get it here at the World’s number one BMX store

Integrated Head Tube

The Subrosa Tiro frame features an integrated head tube to give it a clean look that separates it from other entry level bikes. The frame is mid sized at 20.5′ which makes it perfect for all types of riding.

It also features an integrated headset and bottom bracket. The frame is made from durable hi-tensile steel. This bike is built to last.

Rant Semi-Sealed Cassette Hub

The Subrosa Tiro features many top aftermarket parts and the Rant Cassette hub is one of them. This hub is semi-sealed so not quite as good as the one on the Verde Eon but it is still an amazing hub.

It has been laced to Rant alloy rims to create a strong, lightweight wheel that can suffer most of what you can throw at it.

Subrosa Tiro Features and specification:

  • Frame – Hi-ten steel and integrated headset. 20.5″ top tube length
  • Handlebars – Hi-ten steel 8.75″ rise
  • Stem – Subrosa Uplift top load stem
  • Rear hub – semi-sealed 9tooth cassette hub
  • Rims – Alloy single wall
  • Weight – 27.7 lbs

Final Review:

The Tiro is designed for the novice level rider but mimics the pro level bikes exceptionally. It features aftermarket parts from brands like Subrosa, the Shadow Conspiracy and Rant. It is a great buy for someone who has just started riding and wants something that will last a long time. This bike will see you from the beginning to the time that you are thinking about a mid level bike. A classic colour scheme and a modern look make this bike stand out in the crowd.

This bike rides well. With a responsive frame design and high rise bars to keep you in control when learning your first tricks. The frame’s top tube is a medium length which most riders will enjoy and find comfortable.

A good buy.
